Rep. Richard Hanna attacks with “bait & switch” tactic to avoid voters

What do you do if you are an incumbent with a record of attacking your own Party, voting against the wishes of constituents, and supporting job creation for foreigners over Americans? In the case of Rep. Richard Hanna, you avoid any public instance of defending your record and instead try to distract voters. A classic bait and switch manuever, one of the very worst of immoral sales tactics.

To be clear, on 4/21/14, WNBF News Radio and Time Warner Cable invited Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney and the incumbent to debate the issues. This is a critical offer as there is no Democrat in the race and whomever wins the NY Primary on June 24th will defacto be the next Representative in Congress for the NY 22nd Congressional District.

Assemblywoman Tenney accepted. Rep. Richard Hanna made no comment. Until April 24th. That when he went on the offensive in an offense to voters.

Rep. Hanna chose to try to steer the discussion away from the issue at hand, which is his voting record and positions he has taken. Instead he has attacked Claudia Tenney about doing her job as an Assemblywoman. He has tried to shift the race for the NY-22 to a race for the 101st Assembly seat – which is not even in question at this time.

Hidden deep in the attack on Tenney was the following response about the actual issue, the debates, “A Hanna spokesperson says the Congressman has neither officially accepted nor refused the offer to debate.”

Neither refused or accepted? Which is it? Why is there such ambivalence?

Still, the response is not shocking. Rep. Hanna took the same stance in the summer of 2014, while the nation and the world took a position on the unilateral actions of President Obama and Syria. At the time I stated,

“[Hanna] is 1 of 2 Republicans, and 1 of 16 members of Congress representing New York State, that have clearly stated they have no position on the issue at this time.

When the use-of-force resolution is finalized, I will review it closely to determine whether or not actions enabled by it advance vital interests of the United States and are in the best interest of upstate New Yorkers” – Rep. Richard Hanna 9/4/13

…@electvasquezny – “Leadership is not about winning every battle or being right in every debate, its about decisiveness in the face of ambiguity.”

Of course Rep. Hanna learned from his honest portrayal of his bandwagoning attempt in 2013. Thus we see that in 2014, rather than take a stand so that voters can actually evaluate him, he has chosen to deflect away from the issue. He is actively hiding from the voters – a sure sign in my mind that he is aware that his record will cost him the election if anyone looks at it.

Once again Rep. Hanna assumes that the public is too dumb to see his actions for what they are, and he hopes (I believe) that they are too apathetic to take action in the Primary in June. I believe he is wrong on both counts.

The NY-22, and America as a whole, deserve to have politicians that are willing to stand up and be accountable. Congress is rife with manipulators that are only successful at maintaining their own positions of power, and the approval rating reflects this. It is well beyond time that we see principled, consistent, accountable representation on the floor of Congress.

The fact that Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney has a record that confirms this is a threat to the re-election of Rep. Hanna, and thus – without a record of consistency or even publicly supported positions – the Hanna campaign is resorting to dirty tricks and mudslinging.

I think we can clearly see why he won’t take a position on a debate.

Preview of 100.7FM WUTQ interview on “Talk of the Town” with Mark Piersma

Today I was on the radio with Mark Piersma, host of “Talk of the Town” on 100.7FM station WUTQ, at 7:20am. It was a good conversation that delved into the reasons why I am running for elected office. A copy of that conversation will be available later today.

Of course there is no way to fully cover all the reasons for my run in the New York 2014 Congressional race and issues facing this nation in just 18 minutes. The issues are too diverse, and need far more discussion. In fact that is one of the things that I take issue with; the fact that politicians today count on people only getting 30 second soundbites about the issues – one of the reasons that there was some interest in Obamacare (Affordable Care Act) though we have learned that there were many lies and hidden truths to that law that were never disclosed to the public.

That of course is not the fault of Mark Piersma, or Bob Joseph of WNBF (whom I was on air with on Nov 19th), or many others in the media. There is only so much time for each candidate/elected official, and the onus is on the person running for office to impart what is at issue and where they stand. Which is why I am writing this article.

The first question was who I am. As I have provided, I am 45 years old; a former Marine reservist; a homeowner in Binghamton, NY; the owner of M V Consulting, Inc.; a licensed auto insurance agent; a former stockbroker; and a political commentator. I like to think that you can sum that up as just a regular American. I work a full-time job, pay bills, have debt, and struggle just like every constituent in the NY-22 if not the nation. Which means I understand directly the concerns and issues we all face, everyday. Something that I feel Congress is far too detached from.

The reason I am running, as you have read, is because effective connections to the people leads to better representation in Congress and better laws that actually deal with the issues facing us today, and the generations to come. I believe that currently we are not seeing that representation in the NY-22. We cannot count on our views being presented or defended if for no other reason than our current representative, Rep. Richard Hanna, has a history of taking multiple sides of issues and ultimately voting often in contradiction to what he has publicly said.

I mention in the interview that this is a common facet of Rep. Hanna. I confirmed that with the article from October 5, 2010 by Time Magazine, where Rep. Hanna is noted for back-pedaling on the Islamic temple issue of the time. Further it delved into the nature of the then-candidate.

“Hanna then walked back his seeming support for the project, saying that while its proponents have a constitutional right to proceed, to do so would be “insensitive.”… Hanna, a businessman who almost beat Arcuri in 2008, isn’t afraid to say he’s a moderate…When a local television news station suggested that House minority leader John Boehner…is more conservative than Hanna, the candidate replied, “Most of them are. I am not in the mainstream with most Republicans.”

In that one article we learn, and Rep. Hanna confirms, he is not a Conservative – though he ran on the Conservative ticket. This was later confirmed in the WKTV News interview – 4/8/11, published on Youtube 8/27/13 – Congressman Hanna on looming government shutdown – http://youtu.be/vnzeuqlv-2M – minute 2:42 – 2:52 – Rep. Hanna describes himself as “…one of the more independent people down here…”

This is further confirmed by the conservative rating of Rep. Hanna by Ballotpedia – in 2011 he was rated 198th most conservative member of the House of Representatives (out of 435 members). In 2012 he was rated 211th.

More recently there was his vote with the Amash Amendment (H Amendment 413) which would have placed limitation on the power of the NSA to abuse their power as they have been proven to be doing. Rep Hanna voted against this bill. But on his description of the vote Rep. Hanna said (which he has since pulled from http://hanna.house.gov/vote-explanations1/showallitems/)

“Finally, I supported an amendment that ensures the National Security Agency (NSA) may not target a U.S. person or acquire and store the content of a U.S. person’s communications, including phone calls and e-mails. I will continue to support Constitutionally-protected civil liberties and the right to privacy for all American citizens.” – as written on 7/25/13 at 8:30AM and has since been pulled down from Rep. Hanna’s Congressional site

It is up to you to decide if his decision to pull his stated comments or his flip flop on the votes are the more troubling aspect.

There is far more that could be confirmed on what I said of Rep. Hanna, like his effort to turn women away from the Republican Party (5/22/12), or his actions in making “ceremonial” votes in the face of Republican alternatives he feels are “not viable” (Youtube, 2/10/11, posted by theplumlinegs – http://youtu.be/g-dxefhCfg4 minutes 1:21 – 1:49).

I will simply say that my opinion has been formed after due diligence and research. My decision has been based on discussion with the constituents of the New York 22nd Congressional district. All I ask is for the public to hear me out, and weigh what I offer against that of Rep. Hanna, and voters can choose whom they think is the best option.

I support the LIBERT E Bill – H.R. 2399. Along with 48 members of congress (Rep Hanna is not one of them) I believe that the NSA should not blanket collect US citizens phone and internet transactions. What do you think?

So after an hour long discussion (on my part, the other side was just going for personal attacks), it again has become clear that some people will reject all scientific proof – from State and Government sources, collected over years and rechecked – because they don’t like the answer. Then I get the threat that I won’t get their vote.

Good. No one should vote for someone they don’t believe in. Ever. But I won’t change my views to pander to the public just to get an extra vote. That’s what I dislike in Congress and Government now. That’s why things are so screwed up.

You don’t have to agree with me 100%, just vote for whomever you believe is sincere and honestly trying to represent the people. If we all do that, America will be better for it.

According to the Obama Administration the NSA can violate the 4th Amendment. According to efforts by the drone caucus (which Rep Hanna is a member) unmannes aerial systems need no laws and can violate the 4th Amendment. Britain has supported every military action by US that I recall, even if they didn’t like it. But on Syria they are out, and the powerhouse of France is backing us. When was the last time France won a military action? Napoleon? Is this really the only support we are getting. Shouldn’t this give pause as maybe something is wrong.

**************************************************************************

I think you can find the answer on what to do about Syria in the following quote from December 20, 2007…

“The president does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.

As commander-in-chief, the president does have a duty to protect and defend the United States. In instances of self-defense, the president would be within his constitutional authority to act before advising Congress or seeking its consent. History has shown us time and again, however, that military action is most successful when it is authorized and supported by the legislative branch. It is always preferable to have the informed consent of Congress prior to any military action.”

I find it interesting that even as Speaker Boehner is stating that there are issues Republicans in the House are concerned with, Rep. Hanna (NY-22) has taken both sides of the issue. He has advocated for immigration reform, visas for foreigners, and voted to deport illegal immigrants in the face of President Obama’s Executive Order. How can the border be secured, and compromise reached if some Republicans can’t even give constituents a consistent position on the issue?

In my experience so far, speaking to young voters at Binghamton University about my exploratory committee for the NY-22, the critical factor appears to be the choices they have for their vote. From what I have heard so far, young voters feel left out and ignored – some even betrayed after 2008 and 2012 elections. Yet as I have spoken to them, they seem energized and deeply involved. So the answer is not really the specific issues, its about addressing the lack of accountability and responsiveness of elected officials currently in Congress (in both Parties).

The GOP and young voters: A failing relationship?

*******************************************************************************************

I find it interesting and encouraging that like my own exploration of a run for Congress in the NY-22, Erika Harold and so many others are seeking elected office – that are not career politicians. For too long, in my opinion, there has been a disconnection (in both Parties) with constituents and the elected officials in D.C.

The fact that, like myself, many of those seeking office in 2013 and 2014 are Republicans of diverse backgrounds and walks of life only confirms that America may finally be on the path to a better government. One that has the common sense, accountability and responsibility that voters have – which Congress has proven for decades it does not.

On Monday August 19th at 9:30 a.m., Michael Vasquez returned to the Bob Joseph Show on WNBF Talk Radio 1290AM. Michael Vasquez comments on WNBF interview with Bob Joseph

At 10:30am Bob Joseph of WNBF Talk 1290 AM Radio had Michael Vasquez on the airwaves to discuss the exploratory committee and a potential run for the 22nd Congressional District seat of New York. The discussion covered a range of issues: immigration reform, the 4th Amendment, the approval rating of Congress, term limits, and the background of Mr. Vasquez.

Bob Joseph of WNBF Talk Radio 1290 AM

Bob Joseph of WNBF Talk Radio 1290 AM

One of the biggest issues was the impending concern of drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) and the potential for abuse by a Government that is currently trying to justify the overreach of a NSA program that has effectively violated the privacy of every American in the nation. Rep. Richard Hanna is a member of the “Drone Caucus”, seeking to promote drone testing and production in New York State. Current projections envision the creation of some 2,000 jobs due to drone testing.

Michael Vasquez voiced his concern to Bob Joseph

‘We are talking about filling the skies with drones, and they have their uses. For firefighters and police, of course. But there is not a single law addressing drone use, and we have a Government that is already abusing the 4th Amendment. What is to prevent a drone from sitting outside your living room window? We need to pause, and create some rules before we sell our Rights on the cheap.’
